Scott Chambers and Brian Lawrence founded Headwater Investment Consulting in 2004. Prior to forming the company, both Scott and Brian operated as independent investment advisors.

The People

Scott Chambers, Ph.D.
In 1988, Scott earned a Ph.D. from UC Davis and has been a Professor of Finance at Linfield College since 1990. He has assisted select endowments, foundations, and individuals as a Registered Investment Advisor since 1998. Scott served as Linfield College's Vice-President for Finance and Administration from 1996-97 overseeing the College's financial systems, business operations, facilities, risk management, human resources, and investment management functions. He spent 1997-98 in England at the Nottingham Business School as a Visiting Fellow of Finance. Scott has taught investments over the satellite educational broadcasting network, Ed-Net, and frequently speaks at national conferences on investments and asset management.

Brian Lawrence, CFA
In 1999, Brian earned his BS in finance and economics from Linfield College. He became a Chartered Financial Analyst in 2002. Since 1999, Brian has worked as a Registered Investment Advisor, assisting individuals and institutions. As an analyst and portfolio manager, he directly managed asset allocated portfolios and initiated research into individual securities and pooled investments. Most recently, Brian owned and operated Lawrence Investment Management, an independent investment management company. In 2004, Scott and Brian united their strengths as partners in Headwater Investment Consulting. Brian is a member of the CFA Society of Portland.

Carol B. Mason
In 1994, CB earned her BS in International Business from Linfield College. She joined Global Footwear Logistics at adidas International in Portland, OR. She transferred to adidas America to work in the Apparel Marketing group, holding roles as Product Line Manager, Merchandise Manager, and Operations Manager. In 2002, CB and her husband returned to McMinnville. After 10 years with adidas, CB briefly "retired" from the work force to be home with their two sons. In 2006, CB joined Headwater to manage the office and marketing efforts.

We also understand that investing is a very private activity. Therefore, we listen carefully to your wishes and ensure the strict confidentiality of our relationship.

The Process

We start building our investment relationship through a series of personal meetings. These meetings allow us to learn more about each other, and to lay the foundation for a successful, long-term relationship. We help you understand your investments and to set goals. We then develop a written investment plan tailored to your specific needs and goals.

A Written Plan

The plan, or Investment Policy Statement (IPS), sets forth a customized blueprint for the on-going management of your assets according to your objectives.

Your IPS is important for a number of reasons. First, it provides a basis for understanding your goals and for constructing a plan for achieving those goals. Second, it creates a framework for disciplined decision making. Discipline prevents emotion driven, ad hoc revisions to strategy. Finally, your IPS facilitates communication and aids both client and manager in understanding issues of importance and concern.

Long-Term Relationships

At Headwater Investment Consulting, we are accessible and work hard to develop long-lasting, productive relationships. We keep you up-to-date with monthly statements, and customized, quarterly reports summarize client investments, transactions, asset allocation, and performance. We meet with you at least once a year to review your IPS, making sure it continues to reflect your goals.
